Who buys the oil and gas from my lease?
Your lease
The name your royalty statement prints, or the district and number.
Loading who the state lists for this lease.
What the list is
When an operator produces oil or gas in Texas it files a Form P-4 with the Railroad Commission. The form lists who is authorised to gather the production and who buys it. This page reads the Commission’s published file for your lease and puts it in plain words.
Why it matters to a royalty owner
- The buyer sets the price. Your royalty is figured on what the oil or gas sold for, so a different buyer can mean a different price.
- A company can do both jobs. When one company gathers and buys the gas, the fee for moving it can show up as a deduction on your stub. The deductions guide shows which lines to compare.
- A change is a question to ask. If a buyer was replaced before your price dropped, ask the operator why.
The list says who may buy, not what they paid. To see whether the price on your stub is in line with the market, use the oil price check. To have us check the whole statement against the state record, upload it.

Common questions
Short answers. Sources are at the end of the page.
How do I find out who buys the oil from my lease?
Look up the lease here. The operator files a Form P-4 with the Texas Railroad Commission that lists the gatherers and purchasers authorised to move and buy the lease's oil and gas. We read the Commission's published file and show the companies, the share each one takes and the date the listing began.
What is the difference between a gatherer and a purchaser?
A gatherer moves the production from the lease, by truck or pipeline. A purchaser buys it. They can be the same company. The purchaser's price is the one your royalty is figured on, so it is the company to ask about when a price looks low.
Why does a company show up without a name?
The transporter file lists each company by its Railroad Commission P-5 number. When the number is not in the Commission's company file we show it as a company number instead of guessing a name.
Does the buyer on the list tell me what I was paid?
No. The list shows who is authorised to buy and move the production. It says nothing about the price or the deductions. Compare the price on your stub with what Texas oil sold for using the oil price check.
How current is this?
The state publishes the P-4 file periodically, and each result shows the date of the file it came from. A company that stopped buying shows under the companies that used to be listed, with the date its listing ended.
The list is empty for my lease. What does that mean?
The Commission has no gatherer or purchaser on record for the lease. That happens on leases that have stopped producing or where the operator has not filed a current P-4. Ask the operator who buys the production.
