Why did I get several mineral tax bills?

Type the name printed on your bills. We read the county appraisal rolls and sort your accounts into piles, one for each lease, with the reason each bill is separate.

As the bill prints it, like Whitfield Jordan T. For a trust, an estate or a company, its name.

Counties on the bills (optional)

Leave them all unticked to search every county roll we hold.

The name you type is not saved and does not go in the web address. The answer is not kept.

Your bills are sorted here, one pile for each lease

Type the name printed on the bills and choose Sort my bills. Each pile says why its bills are separate: another lease, another kind of interest, another tract, or that the county record does not show enough to say.

Get an email before the protest deadline

Add the account numbers from your tax bills. For each one we email you 45, 30, 14, 7 and 1 day before the 2027 protest deadline, Monday, May 17, 2027, unless your notice gives you a later day.

The account number comes from your paper bill. The free view of your bills does not show account numbers. Each bill prints its number near the top, as Account, Acct No. or Property ID. Copy it with its dashes.

When your notice arrives, add the date it was delivered. Notices of appraised value usually come in April or May. A notice delivered after April 15 gives you 30 days from delivery, and we move the reminders to that day.

Why one owner gets several bills

Texas appraisal districts tax a mineral interest where the oil and gas is, as its own account. The roll lists one account for each lease you hold an interest in, and a separate one for each kind of interest in that lease: a royalty (a share of production free of drilling costs), an overriding royalty (a share carved out of a lease that ends with it) or a working interest (a share of the costs and the income). Each account is billed on its own, so several bills in one envelope are usually several leases.

How we sort them

  • Another lease. One bill for each lease. Normal.
  • Same lease, another kind of interest. A royalty and an override on one lease are two accounts. Normal.
  • Same lease, another tract or well. The roll describes different property. Normal.
  • Same lease, two shares. A different decimal (your share of the lease, like 0.00200000) on each account, often two purchases or two inheritances.
  • Same share under two names. Often an estate not yet moved to the heirs. We give you the question for the district.
  • Not enough in the record. The roll does not show what sets the accounts apart. We say so, and give you the question to ask.

What we never say

We do not call any bill a duplicate, and we do not say the appraisal district made a mistake. Two accounts can look alike on a roll and still cover different property. When the roll cannot tell them apart, the page says the county record does not show enough to say, and gives you the question to ask the district.

The protest deadline

You can protest the value on each account. The written notice of protest is due May 15, or 30 days after your notice of appraised value was delivered if that is later, moved to the next business day after a weekend or holiday. For 2027 the earliest deadline is Monday, May 17, 2027. The protest guide has each county’s filing page. A free account gets email reminders before the day for every account you add.

Your notice prints your own date. That date wins.

Questions owners ask

Common questions

Short answers. Sources are at the end of the page.

Why do I get more than one mineral tax bill?

The appraisal district taxes each mineral interest as its own account, and each account gets its own bill. There is usually one account for each lease, and one for each kind of interest in a lease: a royalty and an overriding royalty on the same lease are two accounts. Some districts also bill each tract or well of a lease on its own. An owner with royalty in five leases usually gets five bills.

Am I being taxed twice on the same interest?

Two bills on the same lease are usually two separate interests: two kinds of interest, two tracts, or two shares that came to you separately. When the county record does not show enough to tell, this page says so and gives you the question to ask the appraisal district. It never calls a bill a duplicate from the roll alone.

What does “not enough in the record” mean?

The roll lists two or more of your accounts with the same lease, the same kind of interest and the same description, and nothing else on the roll tells them apart. That can be the district's own numbering, two tracts written up the same way, or something the district would correct. Ask the appraisal district which property each account covers.

Why does the free view not show my account numbers?

A county roll names a private person and prints a decimal and an appraised value next to the name. The free view shows the counts, the lease names and the reasons. The Owner plan adds each account number, decimal and value. Your paper bill has the account number, so copy it from there to set up reminders.

When is the 2027 protest deadline?

May 15, or the 30th day after your notice of appraised value was delivered, whichever is later (Tax Code section 41.44(a)(1)). A last day on a weekend or holiday moves to the next business day (section 1.06). For 2027 that makes the earliest deadline Monday, May 17, 2027. Your notice prints your own date.

Find the deadline for your county

What do the reminders send, and can I stop them?

An email 45, 30, 14, 7 and 1 day before the protest deadline for each account you add. A free account can keep reminders for 20 accounts; the Owner plan has no limit. Stop any account on this page at any time.

Is the name I type saved?

No. It is sent to our server once to sort the bills, is never put in the web address, and the answer is not stored. Reminders keep only the county and the account numbers you add.

A free account emails you before Monday, May 17, 2027 for each bill. The Owner plan sets the value on your notice beside what the account earned, with the letter: the protest evidence pack.
