What is on a company page, and what is not

On the page

  • The Railroad Commission P-5 record: number, status, organization type, activities filed, city.
  • The business entity in the Comptroller's franchise file: legal name, Secretary of State number, status, when formed. Marked possible when it matched by name and not by a shared number.
  • Oil and gas reported over the last twelve months, and the change from the year before.
  • Drilling permits, the leases it operates, and the leases it took over or handed over.
  • Public companies whose filings name the operator, when the filing says so.

Not on the page

  • Any rating, score or label. A record is not a verdict.
  • Reviews, complaints or what someone said about the company.
  • Anything about a person: no individual and no estate has a page, and no home address is shown.
  • A promise about how it will treat you. Read what it sends you, and ask in writing.

Where does this information come from?

From the state. The operator record is the Railroad Commission's P-5 Organization Report file. The business entity is the Texas Comptroller's franchise tax file, which carries the Secretary of State file number. Permits, leases and production are the Commission's own reports. Every card on a company page names its source and the date of the file.

The sources

Is a company here reliable, or a scam?

This site does not rate companies and does not use labels like that. A page states what the state's records show: who is listed, what its status is, where it operates, what it reported. Compare that with what the letter, the offer or the check stub says. A name that has no state record is a reason to ask more questions, not proof of anything.

Got a letter from a company?

What is an operator, and what is a buyer?

An operator drills, runs and reports the wells on a lease, and files a P-5 with the Railroad Commission to do so. A buyer, or purchaser, takes the oil or gas at the lease or a gathering point. Some companies do both. Your royalty check can come from either, so the name on the stub may not be the operator's.

Why can't I find a person or an estate?

Company pages are for businesses only. The state files list individuals and estates as operators too, and this site does not publish a page for a person.

The company that pays me changed. Where do I look?

Search the new company here to see its record and the leases it operates, and open the operator changes on the lease page to see when it took over. A new payor may need a new owner number and a new division order.
