Questions people ask
How do I find the operator on my royalty check?
Look for the payor name printed on the check stub. It is usually the operator, the company the Railroad Commission holds responsible for the lease, though some checks come from a purchaser or an accounting company paying for the operator. Search the name here, open the company, and compare the lease name and number on your stub with its leases.
What is an operator, and how is it different from the buyer of my oil?
The operator runs the wells and files the production reports. The purchaser or gatherer is the company that takes the oil or gas from the lease. The Railroad Commission lists both for a lease, and they are often different companies. Your royalty is figured on what the lease sold, whoever pays you.
Why is the operator I know not in this list?
The list holds operators with at least three leases and oil or gas reported in the last twelve months. A smaller or inactive operator has no page here, but its leases are still in the lease search.
Can I see whether an operator pays on time?
The statute sets the first date: 120 days after the end of the month of first sale. After that, payment follows the lease or the written agreement, and if that is silent, no later than 60 days after the end of the month for oil and 90 days for gas (Natural Resources Code section 91.402). Statements owners upload feed the payment-timing figures on an operator's report card, shown only where five or more owners contribute.
